Essity invests in improving the recycling of beverage cartons in France for the manufacture of Tork products

07/09/21

Essity, Global hygiene and health company, invests more than 11 million euros at its industrial site in Hondouville in France, to extract 98% of the paper fibers contained in beverage cartons, with a view to recycling them. These fibers will then be used in the manufacturing process of Tork® branded products, dedicated to professional hygiene.

Essity's factory in Hondouville manufactures tissue products for Tork, the Group's dedicated professional hygiene brand. Since 2008, it has been a leader in France for the recycling of paper fibers from documents, magazines, newspapers and beverage cartons. In Hondouville, Essity currently recycles more than 63% of all beverage cartons sorted, collected and recycled in France.1

The €11 million investment in Hondouville will enable Essity to increase its beverage carton recycling capacity by up to 24,000 tons per year. Thanks to a new process, it will also make it possible to recover more material and recycle up to 98% of the fiber contained in each of the beverage cartons.

Once recovered and recycled, the fibers are used to make Tork toilet paper, hand towels or industrial wiping papers. They also offer a range of tissue products for use in public washrooms (hotels, restaurants, schools, offices, administrations, public places, hospitals, motorway areas, etc.), wiping solutions for the industrial sector and assorted tableware (napkin and tablecloths) for hospitality and catering environments. This major recycling development is aligned with Tork's environmental strategy which aims to help its customers improve their sustainability performance, as well as creating more value for themselves, their employees and their customers.

"This investment improves our contribution to a circular society with cost-effective and sustainable production. We also take important steps towards reaching Essity’s goal that all production waste will be subject to material or energy recovery by 2030," says Magnus Groth, President and CEO at Essity

Eric Kleinpeter, Commercial Director professional hygiene France at Essity, says, "This new industrial process will allow Essity to substantially increase the amount of recycled beverage cartons used to manufacture our Tork professional hygiene products. The initiative brings a new dimension to recycling and circularity. By investing more and more in technologies that reduce our environmental impact, Tork offers its customers solutions that meet their own sustainable development goals."

"The new recycling system currently being implemented at the Essity site in Hondouville will be fully operational in the first half of 2022. Beyond its sustainable benefits, this project also has other positives. For example, it makes it possible to improve logistic flows on site and to reduce the risk of accidents by clarifying vehicle and pedestrian traffic zones. An important element when aiming for zero injuries," adds Anne Conte, Director of the Essity plant in Hondouville.
