SCA and Miron Construction Earn ‘Healthy Sustainable Business Network’ Designation from Town of Menasha

Business neighbors are first in Wisconsin to earn an HSBN designation for commitment to health, safety, sustainability and environmental stewardship

NEENAH, Wis. - The Town of Menasha awarded the Service Excellence Center of SCA and Miron Construction the town’s first Healthy, Sustainable Business Network (HSBN) designation Monday night, citing their leadership in creating a local business environment committed to sustainability, environmental stewardship, health and safety.

Margie Weiss, a community health advocate who presented the designations along with Town Chairman Arden Tewes on behalf of the town’s HSBN audit committee, said it was the first such designations to be presented by a Wisconsin municipality.

The HSBN system utilizes an audit process to identify business neighborhoods and networks that demonstrate leadership in fostering health, wellness, safety and sustainability. The program is designed to recognize those businesses for their actions and commitment, to encourage others to follow suit, and to attract like-minded businesses to locate in the town.

SCA’s Service Excellence Center (SEC) and Miron Construction, which are located next to each other on McMahon Drive, have a history of working together on environmental and community initiatives, from a storm water biolfitration research project with state and national ramifications to tree plantings along the Friendship Trail that runs through their properties.

Other environmental and sustainability projects by SCA include the installation of wind and solar alternative energy systems, environmental education grants to local schools, participation in annual green events such as Earth Day and America’s Recycles Day, and the company’s E-Save energy conservation program.

The safety programs of the SEC’s First Responder Committee, the progressive health and wellness programs of SCA, and the company’s strong philanthropic outreach in the community, including major donations to local recreational facilities, also played strong roles in the audit process.

“The HSBN designation is not only a measure of attainment of having good standards and practices in safety, health and wellness, and business sustainability in place, but it is also an effective means of identifying where continued progress is possible and a system for sharing what has worked with the rest of the community,” said Mark Phiscator, SCA Tissue Vice President, Engineering and Maintenance,  in accepting the official designation.

“HSBN is not just a status to SCA. It is one of the processes we use to know more fully our impacts and needs, identify improvements that are possible and implement them, and share what we have learned and come to understand,” Phiscator said. “We hope the HSBN process continues to encourage others, and also attracts new business to the Town of Menasha.”

SCA Tissue has 920 employees in the Fox Cities, including 760 between its Menasha mill and Neenah converting facility and 150 at its Service Excellence Center in the Town of Menasha. In addition to Wisconsin, SCA Tissue North America, which is headquartered in Philadelphia, has manufacturing facilities in Alabama, Arizona and New York. The company employs more than 2,000 in the United States.
