Company donates $10,000 to annual JDRF fundraiser in Pittsburgh
PHILADELPHIA — SCA’s North American tissue division is lending its support to the fight against type 1 diabetes in juveniles by donating $10,000 to the 19th Annual Rainbow Gala of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Western Pennsylvania Chapter.
This year’s black-tie event was held last month at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Last year’s gala raised more than $1.1 million toward finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
This year’s gala honored Leo W. Gerard, International President, United Steelworkers, and John P. Surma, chairman and chief executive officer, United States Steel Corporation, for their fundraising leadership roles on behalf of JDRF.
“Diabetes is a medical disorder of the most serious magnitude,” said Gerard. “Finding a cure for type 1 diabetes is critical because of its lifelong consequences. The USW is proud to have played a small role in helping make this year’s event a record-breaking success.”
Don Lewis, President of SCA Tissue North America, said the company is proud to assist the USW and Gerard in supporting the mission of JDRF.
“On behalf of everyone at SCA, we congratulate Leo on being recognized during the Gala and for his support of JDFR,” said Lewis. “SCA and the USW have a shared commitment to employee wellness and safety, and this also extends into our communities. We're proud to join the USW in their support of Juvenile Diabetes research.”
The USW represents more than 1,500 of SCA’s hourly workers in the U.S.
