Free Electronics-Recycling Event in Town of Menasha Diverts More than 19,000 Pounds from Landfill Stream

SCA Tissue and Evergreen Credit Union presented the Town of Menasha with ceremonial checks Monday night, representing their sponsorship of the free electronics-recycling event they co-sponsored at the Town of Menasha Municipal Center on Nov. 13 as part of the annual celebration of America Recycles Day.

Donations of $500 from SCA Tissue and $300 from Evergreen Credit Union underwrote 100 percent of the town’s cost in collecting more than 19,000 pounds of old televisions, computers, monitors, printers and small electronic devices. The half-day event drew drop-offs by nearly 250 vehicles in four hours, Michael VanDyke told the town board. Van Dyke is a Town of Menasha Plan Commissioner and a member of the Town Sustainability Committee, which organized the event.

Shown presenting ceremonial sponsorship checks to the town are, from left to right: Michael VanDyke, Town of Menasha Plan Commissioner and member of the Town Sustainability Committee: Debbie Bruley, Vice President of Operations, Evergreen Credit Union; Arden Tews, Town Chairman; and Mike Dillon, SCA Tissue Manager, Environmental and Risk Management, and Chairperson of the Town Sustainability Committee.

Recycle That Stuff, Appleton, Wis., collected the items and will recycle them for their metal, glass and plastic. The company is licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and ISO 140001:2004 certified.

VanDyke said the event collected:
  • 4,170 pounds of small electronics
  • 3,460 pounds of printers, scanners, fox machines and copiers
  • 3,280 pounds of televisions
  • 3,145 pounds of CRT monitors
  • 2,932 pounds of CPUs
  • 1,932 pounds of Freon items
  • 195 pounds of keyboards and mice

“While it is important that these types and amounts of electronic waste were diverted from the landfills, this event also provided information on electronic waste and its impacts and the owner’s responsibilities,” said Mike Dillon, SCA Tissue Manager, Environmental and Risk Management. “We hope this event helped encourage more environmentally responsible choices in consumption and increased understanding about the impacts of these materials throughout their entire lifecycle.”

Town Chairman Arden Tews thanked the sponsors and the volunteers who made the event such a success. He also cited the successful pre-event publicity, including flyers that were made available at polling places in November.  “I was impressed,” Tews said.
