SCA offers family friendly activity tips for celebrating Earth Hour
PHILADELPHIA, PA – SCA, a global hygiene and paper company with U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia and tissue operations in Barton, Alabama, has developed a list of 10 fun and educational activities individuals and their families can take part in when they are “unplugged” during Earth Hour 2011.
Earth Hour is a global event organized by the World Wildlife Fund where households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances to take a stand against climate change. It takes place this year on Saturday, March 26, at 8:30 p.m. EST.
“In today's high-pressure and high-energy world, everyone can benefit from a quiet 60 minutes of being disconnected – and our planet will benefit from these types of ‘acts of green’ in the long run,” said Mike Kapalko, Sustainability Marketing Manager of SCA’s North American tissue division. “The first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and it is now the largest global climate change initiative with worldwide participation. As one of the greenest companies on the planet, SCA is committed to supporting activities such as these by encouraging sustainable lifestyles and behaviors as a part of people’s everyday lives.”
“Doing the right thing for the environment can also be fun and provide a healthy break from every day routines as the following list demonstrates,” added Kapalko. “Hopefully they will become habit forming.”
SCA’s “10 Things to Do in the Dark” include:
- Go outdoors to stargaze and look for constellations.
- Take a moonlit walk for exercise.
- Play ‘I Spy’ focusing on the sounds you hear in the dark.
- Light a fireplace and “camp out” inside with family and friends.
- Take a relaxing, candle-lit bath.
- Stretch your body and mind with yoga and flexibility exercises.
- Practice the art of storytelling – both fiction and family lore.
- Discover how well you know your 'environment' – quiz each other about things in the house you cannot see then see who scored the highest when you turn the lights on.
- Count your blessings – reflect on the good things in your life.
- Early to bed. We could all use more sleep. Why not tonight?
About Earth Hour
Earth Hour was conceived by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents in Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. On Saturday March 27, 2010 Earth Hour became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.
